Bushfire at Risk Register (BARR)
Hesket Primary School is categorised as Category 2, which means that our site is considered to be at high risk from bushfire. As such Hesket Primary School:
MODERATE: Hesket Primary will OPERATE as usual
HIGH: Hesket Primary will OPERATE and Monitor Conditions
EXTREME: Hesket Primary to RELOCATE to Romsey Primary School
CATASTROPHIC: Hesket Primary will CLOSE
You will be contacted directly via SMS, Seesaw or telephone the day prior to the EXTREME and CATASTROPHIC weather days.
Understanding Warnings
Our Hesket Primary watch zone on the Vic Emergency App is set at 25 km. Our fire response plan is as follows:
ADVICE: we will contact the DET Emergency Controllers and the local CFA and be guided by their advice, monitoring conditions as they may change. At this stage, if it safe to do so, (Romsey Road clear) you may choose to pick up your child.
WATCH AND ACT: we will contact the DET Emergency Controllers and the local CFA and seek advice on whether to:
- evacuate all staff and students to a safe location
- remain on site and monitor conditions
If we evacuate, it will be dependent on the safest evacuation route. You will be notified of this. We ask that you do not attend the school.
EMERGENCY WARNING: area and the warning states that it is too late to leave then we shelter in place and seek further advice. We will contact the DET Emergency Controllers and the local CFA to inform them we are gathering in our Shelter in Place. This is to gain the best advice and ensure emergency services are aware of our situation and are available to assist. At this stage we will be evacuating or Sheltering in Place (on advice) and ask that you do not attend the school. If you arrive at school at this stage, we will encourage you to stay with your child
We have local agreements with Romsey Primary School and Kyneton Primary School and will evacuate to the safest location, given the conditions of the day. Local bus lines are on standby to evacuate us should a situation arise.
If we evacuate, we will be in communication with you via SMS, Seesaw or a phone call.
At all times, the school will endeavour to communicate our actions with families, however we ask that families do not contact the school as we only have two phone lines which need to be available to communicate with emergency services.
We also ask that families do not attend school to pick up their child, as this will dramatically increase traffic in the area. This has the potential to interfere with emergency vehicles, making access more difficult.
This plan was written in conjunction with the Hesket CFA.
Wild Action Zoo Visit - By Caitlin M
On the last Thursday of Term Three, Wild Action Zoo came to visit Hesket. There were a lot of native animals crawling around like owls, birds, reptiles, frogs, possums, koalas, and even a cute kangaroo joey! All of the Hesket students got to learn about these incredible animals and give them a pat. Some students were lucky enough to hold the animals. We learned so much about these unique creatures and we appreciate the Wild Action Zoo visiting. My favourite animal was the tawny frogmouth because they blend in with trees so predators can’t eat them. Imagine having that skill?! Everyone had a fun time on Thursday learning about the animals. We are so grateful to have these animals in our daily life, even if they are hard to spot sometimes. Thank you for visiting, Wild Action Zoo!
Annie - By Amelia
In the last week of Term Three the entire school jumped on a bus and drove into the city for an exciting day at the theatre. Students in Grade Prep to Six all sat in red velvet seats to watch Annie the Musical at the Princess Theatre. The show was full of billionaires, scruffy orphans and dogs named Sandy! The catchy songs about ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘Hard Knock Lives’ will make this show hard to forget. We all had a marvellous time, and students and teachers alike were singing many days after the performance. We can’t wait to visit the theatre again next year!
Regional Athletics - By Ivy
On Monday Ada and I competed in the Regional Athletics competition in Bendigo. I was competing in the 100m and the 200m sprints and Ada competed in the shot put. Ada threw 6.7m and impressively placed sixth overall. I placed 3rd in the 100m sprint and in the 200m, I came second which put me through to the next round which is the State Final. It was pretty thrilling for both of us to make it to Regionals and I’m really excited to be moving through to State in the first week in November. Thank you to Zoe for coming all the way to Bendigo to cheer us both on.
Inquiry this Term - Space - By Aurelia
This term the whole school is learning about Space. We’re looking at black holes, The Milky Way, planets, the Sun and so much more. The Junior grade is working with their buddies to research and make a poster about Space and Middle D and their Middle W buddies are looking at rovers. They will make them with robotic mice and craft tools and learn about how they work. They’ll eventually drive them on ‘Mars’ – I don’t know how they’ll get them there as it takes seven months to even arrive at Mars. Middle D just told me that your blood doesn’t flow properly when you’re in space so I don’t want to be on that trip! In the Senior grade we have been learning about how all of the planets orbit and all of the different theories about it. It's going to be an interesting term!
