Child Safety
In the previous newsletter the 11 Child Safety Standards were summarised. Here is some further information on what implementation looks like at Hesket:
- All permanent staff, casual staff, contractors and volunteers must provide a valid Working With Children Check before engaging in work with or in the proximity of students. We encourage all parents to provide a WWCC so that the office has this on file prior to upcoming events.
- Staff and contractors ensure they are visible when working one-on-one with students, preferring locations with windows, offices with open doors etc. It is an expectation of our parent community that they are not in classroom spaces or offices without a staff member present.
- Students participate in Social Emotional Learning programs that cover understanding boundaries, safe people in family and communities. We encourage families to follow up these conversations at home with every student having at least five trusted adults to talk to in the home and community.
- Staff are rostered on to supervise students from 8.45am to 3.45pm, including all break times. It is an expectation that outside of these times, students are supervised by their parents/guardians, signing students in or out at the main office if arriving late or leaving early and walking students to their classroom or learning activity.
- Staff complete a range of mandatory annual training, including Mandatory Reporting modules. These modules help staff to identify potentially unsafe environments and a greater understanding of their responsibility to report without judgement or investigation. It is an expectation of our school community that they will also report worrying observations to the relevant authorities.
- Staff are expected to remain professional at all times, respecting conversations of a confidential nature. It is expected that our school community also handles information and conversations with sensitivity.

Successful Grant Application
Monday’s state budget confirmed that we are to receive $280,956.00 for  the refurbishment of the student toilets. The project will be managed by the VSBA. This grant application was co-written by our 2025 Senior students.

Hesket's Recognition as High Performing School
It was lovely to receive a phone call from Mary Anne Thomas on Wednesday of last week to not only congratulate us on funds allocated through last Monday’s state budget, but also to congratulate us on being included in a Herald Sun article on the top public primary schools in Victoria. Using a combination of public data, Hesket was listed as 60th in Victoria and 200th nationally.

Maths Professional Learning
Last week Amanda, Bri, Zoe and I attended the first two of five days mathematics professional learning at the Learning Academy in Bendigo. The five days will cover cognitive science, best approaches to assessment and intervention, as well as planning and curriculum development. The first two days have been very positive and we look forward to continuing with day three, later in the term.

Head Lice - Please Check Your Child
Unfortunately head lice have been reported at the school across the grades. Can everyone please check your child/ren for headlice and if found, treat before your child/ren returns to school remembering that no treatment kills all of the eggs so treatment must involve 2 applications 7 days apart.

From the Students

Celebrating Our Wonderful Support Staff - Senior R
Today we celebrate the Education Support staff at Hesket, as today is ES Day.

Our amazing Hesket ES staff are always ready to be helping hands in the classroom and out in the yard. We are so grateful to have them at Hesket, because we couldn't do what we do without them.

You might see them out in the yard helping students, or at the office, at school events, and in the classroom. They support our students who might need a bit of extra help. Every year they also assist with the Production, fundraisers, barbecues, uniforms, aassemblies, camp, excursions, as well as making everyone laugh. We thank Lydia, Katie, Deb, Dayna and Di for all they do each and every day.

Cross Country
On Tuesday 5th May, many students from Hesket Primary went to Cross Country to compete against kids from other schools. The day was filled with fun and heaps of students at all different schools, trying their best to run their fastest two or three kilometre race around Hanging Rock. Everyone tried their hardest and placed amazingly, although there were four certain students who came in the top ten out of their race, qualifying them for the Division Cross Country in Castlemaine. Congratulations to Hannah A, Ivy, Jamie and Ellina. We also congratulate everyone who participated and a big special thanks to staff from all schools who made this special day happen. Good luck to Hannah A, Ivy, Jamie and Ellina for next Friday!

Newsletter Grade 1/2
Junior W have just finished reading the BFG by Roald Dahl. The BFG was not impressed with Snozzcumbers! We interviewed the grade to ask them what their equivalent Snozzcumber type of vegetable?

My snozzcumber is a:
  • zucchini, Kieran
  • zucchini, Richo
  • broccoli, Raffi
  • cucumber, Malakai
  • zucchini, Alice
  • beans, Bailey
  • cucumber and carrot, Wilbur
  • zucchini and pumpkin, Oscar
  • broccoli, William
  • cauliflower, Emily
  • cauliflower, Ita
  • beans, Caleb
  • zucchini and pumpkin, Zach
  • celery and zucchini,  Max
  • broccoli and zucchini, Ruben
  • zucchini, James.

Favourite part of the BFG was when:

  • the army is catching the children eating giants
  • Sophie was in the queen’s window
  • the BFG was eating in the royal palace and he had eggs, toast, sausages and bacon
  • Sophie and the BFG had breakfast with the queen
  • they captured the giants
  • the butler balanced the food on one hand
  • the BFG drank the frobscottle and let one rip!
  • they decided to get the sword for the BFG to use as a knife
  • the BFG was spitting out loads of the snozzcumber
  • the BFG was mixing different dreams into one jar
  • the pin was pushed into the ankle of the fleshlumpeater
  • the BFG told the queen not to try the snozzcumber
  • Sophie read the labels on the dream jars
  • they caught the phizzwizard dream.

From The Playground - Playing Soccer By Kimberly
At recess and lunchtime I have been playing soccer on the oval. Lots of different kids play soccer and anyone can play. You can just join in. Everybody shares the ball around so that everyone gets a kick. It is boys against girls. When someone kicks a goal we all cheer. I really like playing soccer, I also play soccer on the weekend. The more I play soccer the better I will get.

Down Ball By Harry
About 20 or more kids play down ball at recess and lunchtime. It is really competitive. Sometimes you have to wait to a long time to have a turn. It is fun watching while you are waiting for your turn because you get to cheer on the people playing. I am really enjoying playing down ball.

O-Wings In Science By Oliver and Noah
In Science last week we were learning about force, push and pull. We got to use O-Wings. It was lots of fun. Gravity is heavier than air so the O-Wings fell to the ground. Some of the O-Wings hit the roof. We all had  fun playing with the O-Wings. We hope Science Sam brings them in again.
