Messages
School Council contiue to work with Macedon Ranges Shire Council (MRSC) and the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) on possible solutions to our carpark congestion and road safety issues.
We have received drawings from the MRSC engineering team that document plans for a new one way 'kiss and drop' road across the top edge of the oval. This new 'kiss and drop' roadway is subject to MRSC approval.
We continue to work with the VSBA and MRSC and will update you as the project proceeds. In the interim, we thank everyone for their patience and consideration shown to one another.
Maths Fluency Across the School
Across the school we have introduced a more systematic approach to the practice of learning number facts in each of the grades.
We know that number fluency is so important because it:
- frees up cognitive resources that can be applied to learning more complex tasks
- reduces maths anxiety
- enables students to make broader maths generalisations
- esures long-term retention
- builds endurance and stability.
- accuracy before speed
- short, frequent, deliberate practice
- the recall of basic maths problem in 2-3 seconds
- students practising facts until they can’t get them wrong, not just until they can get them right.
Book Week and Dress Up Day at Hesket
Book Week is coming up shortly and will culminate in a fun dress up day on Friday the 28th of August. We have heard that many students have been busy planning costumes and look forward to this being a fun day.
Concert
Drama with Paul each Wednesday has become an absolute highlight of the week. This week all students have been given a role and seem to be having lots of fun rehearsing their lines.
Filming will take place over the next three Wednesdays; please ensure that your child is at school (with the exception of unavoidable illnesses) so they do not miss their opportunity to be included in their class movie.
As filming will occur over multiple weeks, we also ask that students are dressed consistently across the Wednesdays, for example, in the same shorts or with the same hairstyle or headband.
Ticketing information will be coming home shortly for our premiere on the evening of 10th of October at Romsey Mechanics Institute. Generally we are able to provide each family with four tickets.

Basketball Clinics - Starting Next Week

Secrets of a Schoolyard Millionaire
What would you do if you found one million dollars? This is the question Middle R have been pondering this term as we read our novel Secrets of a Schoolyard Millionaire by Nat Amoore. In our novel Tess, a budding entrepreneur and her best friend Toby stumble across a bag of cash and face the question of what to do with their find. Do they hand it in or do they spend it? Moral dilemmas, lollipops and jumping castles, charity donations and a whole lot more lie in store for the pair. Middle R have been comparing the different writing styles of this book with our previous novels, as well as pulling apart the characters and their relationships and following along with all of Tess’ top tips.
About Class novel – OnceGrace and Annie
This term in Senior D we have been reading our class novel called Once by Morris Gleitzman. It is about a young Jewish boy in WWII Poland who is sent to an orphanage by his parents, but escapes the orphanage to go and look for them. We are doing whole class readings of chapters out loud together and practising answering questions about the text in full sentences. Through this book, we have explored the history of WWII and have learned about Poland, the country the book is set in. We have gathered information about Poland through taking lots of notes and are writing information reports about Poland’s history, economy, flora and fauna, government, people and culture. Even though it is a complex book and a tricky topic, it has helped us to learn about the history of WWII and Poland.
In Junior W, we are reading James and the Giant Peach

Richo – My favourite character is aunt Sponge because she is always getting angry at James.
James – My favourite character is James because my name is James.
Oscar – Aunt Spiker is my favourite because I like how she gets angry.
Raffi – I like the giant peach because it just keeps bigger and bigger annnndddd bigger.
Em – I like Aunt Sponge because she gets angry.
Zach – I like the giant peach because it gets really big.
Caleb – I like the old man because he gives James the crocodile tongues.
Bailey – I like the peach because it grows a lot.
Sid – I like the peach because it doesn’t stop growing.
Malakai – I like the peach because it grows bigger.
Alice – I like Aunt Sponge because she wants to eat the peach straight away.
Ruben – I like Aunt Spiker because she is skinny and tall.
William – I like Aunt Spiker because she is enormous.
Wilbur – I like the peach because it grows humongous.
Maths in P/1 this week
In Maths in P/1 this week we are learning how to measure lengths of items in our classroom using unifix blocks and counters. We have loved all of the fun measuring activities like making towers, measuring strips of card and building tall towers. We have been looking at how many items it takes to build each tower. It has been great to work with our friends!
